EIGHTY expatriates and Chinese enjoyed the spring weather while eating, drinking and socialising at a Vietnamese buffet dinner on a roof-top terrace adjacent to artist Ong The Huy///'s personal art studio on April 16.

A well-set long table in a covered area was centred on the roof with small round tables, large jars of taro leaves, romaine and Chinese lettuce, as well as pots of flowers in the surrounding area. A row of food containers lined the enclosure, between which three cooks were quite busy. The terrace was illuminated with an appropriate arrangement of lights. Some lit oil lamps were placed on the table, adding reminiscent and romantic atmosphere to the party.

Ong The Huy, an artist who was born in Vietnam and educated in England, owns the Vietnamese restaurant. He served as a bartender, providing wine and drinks.

The guests arrived in succession, greeted each other and talked in groups. Many were from United International College (UIC) in Jinding of Tangjiawan Town.

The guests were greatly de-lighted by authentic Vietnamese cuisine such as fresh shrimp rolls, succulent fresh prawns sitting on a bed of pork, vermicelli, lettuce basil and peppermint wrapped in a tight band of rice paper; Vietnamese spring rolls with pork, fungus and shallots wrapped in a lightly fried rice paper; steamed pork buns with marinated pork, fungus, shallots, vermicelli encased by a steamed rice envelope topped with fried shallots, garlic and fresh mint; and other condiments.

Clare Fitzgerald, a teacher of public relations at UIC, spoke highly of the dinner. ///"I had Vietnamese food before, and it///'s my first time to taste it in China. I think it///'s wonderful,///" she said. ///"I like the setting, the atmosphere, the flowers, plants, the light being outside; and the food is great.///"

Because she has taught for three years in Zhuhai, Clare said she knew almost half of the guests. She was happy that she could meet with friends while enjoying the environment and food.

Eva Lynne, an American who has lived in Zhuhai for ten years, explained why she invited her friends to the dinner. ///"We all go to the same places and we all work together, in different ways. But we never get to enjoy each other closely. It///'s a different atmosphere, different food, and different culture. It also gives us a chance to know people. So we have a party to welcome in the summer and get a chance to do something really different that we don///'t always do, and so we came here,///" she said.

Kitty Pappas, associate professor of music and English and chairperson of the College Life Committee of UIC, said she had been to Vietnam. ///"The food here is very close to that in Vietnam and it///'s very good,///" she grinned: ///"I love tasty food.///"

She also appreciated the surroundings. ///"Very nice scenery, very beautiful place -- a comfort-able place to meet friends and relax.///"

Kitty has also lived in Zhuhai for three years. Making Zhuhai her base, she has traveled around Southeast Asian countries and most of China over the years. She likes to travel, though she admitted life on the move is more difficult. ///"Human beings want to be secure, but you can also learn it///'s very easy not to have that. Every-body has a difficult life. A life is hard and difficult. Life is a struggle. Of course it///'s difficult. You have to accept it. It is life. I///'m very happy to have my life difficult, but I///'m even happier I have my freedom,///" she said.

Donald Bolduc, an American who works at Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai, showed appreciation for the environment and food. He said, ///"The food is really nice.///" He liked the vegetables in the rice envelop, the lovely plants, pretty flowers, tiled floor, the lighting and so on, he noted.

After living in Zhuhai for over two years, Donald said he loves the city. ///"Zhuhai is warm, modern, nice, and not so big. It///'s the nicest place I///'ve ever lived,///" he said.

Marian Lenehan, an Irishwoman who has taught at GLV for three years, said it was her first time to try Vietnamese food and she loved it. ///"Chinese food is delicious, but it///'s nice sometimes to try something not familiar,///" she said.

She also appreciated the environment, especially the table cloth, setting, oil light on the table, and in particular the bathroom. ///"Everything just shows attention to details, and the bath-room is like a work-of-art,///" she said.

Talking about the oil light, Marian said that in Dublin there is a very big park where street lights are lit by gas, which has been maintained as a tourist attraction. ///"It///'s worth the cost of maintaining,///" she stressed.
