Han Clothing Show

SIX young people from Guangzhou promoted the Han Chinese clothing or Hanfu, also known as Hanzhuang or Huafu, at a workshop at Pinghe Traditional Chinese Centre in the Jinxiu Ningxi residential area near Banzhang Mountain on Saturday evening。 Han Chinese clothing refers to the historical dress commonly worn before conquest by the Manchu and the establishment of the Qing Dynasty in 1644。 Hanfu derives its name from the Book of Han, which says,“then many came to the Court to pay homage and were delighted at the clothing style of the Han (Chinese)”。

The Han is the largest of China’s 56 ethnic groups, accounting for more than 90 per cent of the Chinese population today。 Han-style dress had remained the clothing of Han people for three millennia until it was replaced by Manchu-style clothes when the Manchurians came to power more than 300 years ago, explained Li Ting, a costume designer and Hanfu aficionado from Guangzhou。 Following the downfall of the Qing, Han men switched to Western dress and the women adapted Manchu-style clothes -- the cheongsam, which is commonly and wrongly taken for typically Chinese attire or “tangzhuang,” literally attire of the Tang Dynasty。 Today, most Han Chinese wear western-style clothing in everyday life。

Li illuminated the features of the Han attire -- sloping necklines, overlapped collar with hidden buttons and lacing on the right; long, loose and wide-sleeved, and sometimes layered robes。The comfortable and loose costume shows a primitive philosophy of nature-oriented unity between heaven and humanity, she said。

Many traditional costumes of Asian countries, such as the kimono in Japan, along with the traditional Korean dress,Hanbok, have been heavily influenced by the Chinese Hanfu due to extensive cultural exchanges between the countries。 In contrast to China, traditional Japanese and Korean attires have not been affected by similar changes like in China and have been preserved over the centuries, and have retained many core elements of the original Hanfu,Linoted。

Han Chinese clothing is now worn only as a part of historical reenactment, hobby, ceremonial clothing worn by religious priests, or cultural exercise and can be frequently seen on Chinese television series, films and other forms of media entertainment。 However, Hanfu is staging a comeback into the lives of some Chinese people, who are setting trend to restore the traditional Chinese culture and to bring back Hanfu to everyday life。

Xu Mingli, an office worker in Guangzhou, became a Hanfu advocate a year ago。 She had the long dress made to order and wears it to take part in various ceremonies, rites or gatherings。 There are a few hundred Hanfu wearers in Guangzhou and they often exchange ideas on the web, she said。

Another young woman Yu Yuanyi who always wears a Han dress at weekends said: “I cannot tell why I join them to advocate, but I just love the dress。”

The revival of Hanfu reflects an effort by some to find their cultural roots and identity, a traditional Chinese culture advocate noted。

A website, huaxia-han.com, was established by five Han culture lovers in 2003 and now has over 30,000 registered members。 Tianhanwang (tianhan.net), a similar website launched two years ago, has over 10,000 members。 Both often hold public functions to promote Hanfu From hanminzu.com, one can also read articles about reviving the Chinese nation and Han Chinese clothing。

Unlike most social movements in China’s history, the Hanfu movements mushrooming throughout China have not touched the grass roots。 The government has adopted a “let it be” attitude。 However, Ping Hong, director of the Pinghe Traditional Chinese Centre, revealed that the city government is planning for a Hanfu costumes contest。 It shows revival of the traditional Chinese culture and Han attire is becoming an increasing concern of the authorities, he said。

Li talked about the evolution and features of the Han clothing at the workshop and around 20 people were in the audience。 Three women in the Han Chinese costumes demonstrated the magnificence and elegance of the clothing。
