I watched people flow on my left side as I walked on the continuously moving stairway and wondered where my footprints on the steel steps would travel after the cleats meshed with the teeth of a floor plate behind me. For me, the escalator walk was too important; it was a chance to mull over and reflect. Sometimes I would lower my heads and look at various shoes that walked past me. I was always amazed by the diversity of those wonderful little creatures: rubber flip-flops, shocking pink high-heels and black leather shoes. The observation of shoes was not only just a strange hobby at my leisure, but also a chance for me to infer something about the people that were bypassing me by learning their shoes. A pair of boots from which water dripped indicated that the shoe-wearer hastily striding past me already knew it was raining outside when he got out. Henceforth, he might have something really urgent to buy in the shopping mall because he came here in spite of the heavy rain. Also, a Nike sports shoe whose outsole dropped a chewing gum in the cleats on the left edge of an escalator step suggested to me that the young man was not very careful with his ways. The ability to enjoy walking on an escalator was an art. I would put my hand on the rubber cover of the handrail and felt the its rough surface rub against my skin. Yellow demarcation lines of those endless steps flew by my side. Sometimes I would perceive my escalator walk to be a metaphor for my willingness to walk against the current. Although the stairway went in a contrary direction, I often found myself on the top platform of the escalator after starting at the bottom since I just strolled and forgot about time. I did not know how many steps passed me, but I know that it was pretty interesting to promenade upwards, even if my path did not want me to go that way. Sometimes something really unpredictable caught my eyes. Once I spotted the chewing gum that was stuck in the comb-like protrusions of the step left by that Nike shoe again. It was tainted with dark lubrication oil, but still, it was back. That day I suddenly understood. My footprint on the steel track had traveled to no where else but back to its starting point. It seemed that I had walked in an endless loop as the powerful engine of escalator drove the road I had ridden past back to me again. The escalator walk is like the story of my life, because life itself is a cycle. We often suffer from similar worry and anxiety again and again, only on different occasions and in different times. But why bother? If life is a cycle, then why not put a smile on our faces and enjoy constant happiness? The chewing gum ran past my Adidas running shoes into the comb plate and started another cycle of its adventure with excitement. So did I. 编辑:Rebecca
