My road to English
08-07-06
It is amazing that I' in my class and one of the best students in English in my grade. Almost everyone in my class asks me how I can learn English so well. Always I tell them:" Just because Im good at English."
It seems true that I m good at English. But no one knows how confused I felt about English when I started my first year in junior school. I knew next nothing about English then. I even cannot recognize the 26 letters. Of cause, I wasn't the best one in English, I regarded myself as the last one .I almost thought there was no way for we to enter the world of English.
Fortunately, I had a good teacher and a good mother. These two ladies helped me to open the door to English.
My teacher was an experienced expert in teaching English. She devoted all her lifetime into greatest caree in the world—THE ACHING! She knew every well on how to make students like me learn English well. She encouraged us, including me, never to give up. She always told that it was just the begining, here was a long long way for me to go. There is really a long way. With her encouragement, I never gave up. But this lady did not only encourage us, but also was very strick with us. She made us pick up the pen and open our mouth again and again, as if she never felt tired. So everyday in junior school I felt it tired and boring just because of the no-ending rewriting and erciting. But the expected result came out at last--my English improved.
I also got a very very good mother who I thought of and still think of as the most important person in my life. She cared about my study so much she'd never like to see any weakness in my study. So she was even more worried when she saw my disappointing English. To let my English be good, she took every measure she could come up with to let me love English, learn English. But I never changed even if she bit me. She was so disappointed. But she began to visit my school, for nothing but talking with my teacher, asking everything about me in school, just aiming at finding a way which was suitable for me to improve! My teacher was of great duty, she told this lady everything she knew to improve English. And at last my mother learned that the most important thing was to master as many words as possible--and it is the truth.
So she began to stay up with me just to check my words remembering. She did the most usual thing: spoke out the Chinese meaning, let me write down the English word and speak out the spell of the word, and then she checked. If I couldn't recite or rewrite the words-my punishment would arrive-she would make me type the words for several times( ten, twenty, thirty or more) until I memerised them. This was kept for almost three years in total. It seems cruel. But the sweet came right behind the hard--my English improved. And I felt in love with English.
Besides these two ladies' help, I also worked very hard myself. Listening comprehension, vocabulary and structure, reading comprehension, cloze, error correction, and writing, I did a great amount of them. The papers I got through reached a height of about 50 centimetres. This made me be familar to almost every quote I met in exams.
Those are the three main reasons why I learn English well in junior school--working hard, keeping going and doing exercise.
After graduating from the school where I first met English. I went to best senior school in my city for further study. The teachers there are never as good as my first lady and mom can't bear the deep-night-staying any more. Learning is more about my own bussiness now.
And it's really my own bussiness. To keep my English in a high level , I booked a magazine known as"Crazy English" ever since I stepped in senior 2. I've got a lot of useful phrases and epressions from it already. I use them to make sentences and my teacher speaks highly of me because of this. And I feel that my classmates envy me. I don't mind and I love that kind of feeling. This makes me even more love English.
But it isn't the magazine that really matters in my senior English learning. It just helps me to develop my interest in English.A note from a teacher helps more. By present, we learn English to pass the college entering exam. A note from a teacher can be a good guide who can lead you to your success in exams.
Take myself as an example, I take every note my teacher provides. And I often read it , force myself to remeber it. It really works. I often make correct choice in exams while others do not. They don't know why I can do better under the teaching of a same teacher. Actualy, the answer is simple--I just work harder.
But sometimes I really see others reciting their notes, even more often than me. Why can't they do better? I think they never put what they've learned into practice. Practice? Talking with foriengers? Yes! That's brillien! But the fact is that we don't have any foriengers in small cities like mine. What should we do then? Well, listen to my story.
Even though I didn't see any foriengers in the passed 16 years, yet I still get one in my mind. She is a British, 18,have golden hair and blue eyes, in my height , in good shape, my girlfriend. She "stays with" me all the time. I tell "her" about myself, my family, my school, my city...... I tell "her" everything I know. In this way, I practise my English. You can do just like me. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Keep in mind that English is just a language, it's born to be used, to be spoken. Don't think much about gramma, as long as others can understand you. There are only you and your "him" or "her" in your head anyway.
Insteret, hard work and imagination help you in English.
So much I've written, but in a nutshell, learning English is really a personal bussiness. It is yourself who really matters in the end. Teachers can guide you, parents can help you. But they are only about one period. Even this period can't be mentioned when you put it in your lifetime. So to learn English, bulid up your interes, work hard, keep going as well as make the best of your imagination. The result will always be worthy.
